Why We Created Bloom & Gather: A Summer Day for Slowing Down at Our Traverse City Flower Farm
Summer has a funny way of filling itself up. The weekends get booked. The group chats keep going. There are dinners, errands, work, weddings, travel plans, and a growing list of everything we meant to do before the season slipped away.
Even the fun can start to feel like one more thing to squeeze in. Lately, we have been hearing the same thing from so many people: they want something slower.
When we recently asked our Instagram community what had been calling to them, half chose exactly that. Not another packed itinerary or another place to rush through. Just a chance to pause, create, spend time outside and fully enjoy where they are.
That feeling is at the heart of Bloom & Gather.
Why flowers help us slow down
Flowers naturally ask us to pay attention. You begin to notice which varieties are blooming, how the light moves through the fields, which colors are appearing together, and how quickly the season changes.
At Moondance, we believe flowers are about more than beautiful arrangements. They offer a reason to step outside, work with your hands, notice what is growing, and reconnect with what matters. That is what we hope guests experience during Bloom & Gather.
You do not need experience with gardening, art, or floral design. You simply need a willingness to show up, try something new, and let the day unfold.
For anyone searching for slow living tips, this may be one of the simplest: make room for experiences that cannot be rushed.
A little Farm Girl Summer, the Moondance way
Apparently, it is Farm Girl Summer (according to Better Homes & Gardens). Around here, we just call it life at the farm.
It is early mornings, muddy shoes, buckets of flowers, weather-watching, and plenty of hard work behind the beauty. But it is also time spent close to the land, working with your hands, noticing what is blooming, and moving at the pace of the season. That feeling is part of what inspired Bloom & Gather.
The day gives guests a chance to step into the rhythm of the farm, walk the fields, harvest seasonal blooms, learn how flowers are grown, and create with what is growing right here at Moondance.
It is a hands-on farm experience in Michigan rooted in flowers, creativity, and the simple pleasure of slowing down for a while.
What the day looks like
Bloom & Gather begins with coffee, pastries, introductions, and a guided walk through the farm.
Mark will lead guests into the fields to share how Moondance grows more than 100 varieties of flowers each season using sustainable practices on Old Mission Peninsula. You will learn how flowers are harvested, conditioned, and prepared for design, along with what makes locally grown blooms so different from flowers shipped across the country.
From there, Lindsay and Meghan will guide the creative portions of the day, including botanical printing, pressed flower art, and seasonal floral design. There will be time to make, ask questions, explore color and texture, and create without feeling rushed.
Later, the group will gather for wine in the garden before sitting down to a private chef dinner by Jen Kuhar of Mission Proper around a floral table brought to life with flowers from the farm.
Only 12 guests will attend, allowing the experience to remain personal, relaxed, and connected.
One of the Most Unique Things to Do in Traverse City This Summer
There are so many wonderful things to do in Traverse City, from beaches and wineries to restaurants, trails, and waterfront views. Bloom & Gather offers another way to experience Northern Michigan.
It is for the person looking for unique things to do in Traverse City beyond the usual itinerary. It is for the flower lover, the creative friend, the person craving a meaningful girls’ day, and anyone who wants a summer memory that feels a little different.
Located on Old Mission Peninsula, Moondance is surrounded by many of the places that make this area so special. Guests traveling in can build a full weekend around the experience, with local food, wineries, farm stands, lake views, and plenty of time to explore.
For those looking for things to do on Old Mission Peninsula, Bloom & Gather can become the heart of the weekend.
A Northern Michigan getaway built around flowers
Bloom & Gather was created for local guests, but also for anyone craving a reason to come north.
A Northern Michigan getaway does not have to mean seeing as much as possible in two days. Sometimes the best weekends are built around one meaningful experience, with enough breathing room around it to actually enjoy where you are.
Arrive Friday, settle into your stay, and enjoy dinner in Traverse City.
Spend Saturday at the farm with flowers, creativity, food, and connection.
Let Sunday be slow. Find coffee, visit a winery, walk by the water, explore a farm stand, or take the scenic way home.
Bloom & Gather gives you somewhere to be without making the whole weekend feel scheduled.
Come alone, bring a friend, or make it a girls’ weekend
You do not need a full group to attend Bloom & Gather.
The experience is intentionally small and designed to feel welcoming whether you arrive alone, with a friend, as sisters, or as a mother-daughter pair.
You will spend the day alongside people who already share at least one thing in common: a love of flowers, beauty, creativity, or the idea of doing something simply because it feels good.
For anyone planning a girls weekend in Traverse City, Bloom & Gather can be the centerpiece. For anyone coming solo, it can be a chance to walk into a room of strangers and leave feeling connected.
There is no wrong way to show up.
What We Hope You Take Home
Yes, you will leave with things you created. But we hope you take home more than that.
We hope you leave with a new appreciation for locally grown flowers. New skills and ideas. A little more creative confidence. A memory of wine in the garden, flowers in your hands, and a table filled with the beauty of the season.
Most of all, we hope you leave feeling like you gave yourself permission to slow down. Because summer does not always need to be about doing more. Sometimes, one beautiful day is enough.
